Calendar for April 16 Saint Nicetas the Confessor – Holy and Great Wednesday

Born in Bithynia, in the city of Caesarea. His father Philaret, having lost his wife, became a monk, and Nicetas stayed with his grandmother, his father's mother. After he grew up and completed all his studies, he went to the Midiki Monastery, where Abbot Nicephorus tonsured him a monk, and after seven years of hard work and asceticism, Patriarch Tarasius ordained him a hieromonk. After the death of Nicephorus and Nikita's faithful friend Athanasius, the brotherhood elected Nikita, and through his will, hegumen. St. Nicetas was a shining example of life and asceticism to his brotherhood for many years. But when Leo V the Armenian became emperor, after the pious Irina and the orthodox emperors Nicephorus and Michael, the iconoclastic heresy flared up again. The emperor deposed Patriarch Nicephorus and sent him into captivity, and in his place he raised a certain heretic Theodotus Cassiter, a man of impure life. And Nicephorus was imprisoned and tortured, but he did not waver in Orthodoxy. He was transferred from prison to prison, and tormented by hunger and thirst, frost and sweat and mockery. But he did not allow himself to be shaken. He was especially annoyed by a certain Nicholas with mockery and ridicule. But one night his deceased father appeared to Nicholas in a dream and reproachfully said to him: “Depart from the servant of God!” And from that moment on, Nicholas repented and not only did he no longer annoy the saint, but he also discouraged others from annoying him. When Leo the Armenian died an evil death, the kingdom was taken over by the orthodox emperor Michael Valvos, who freed all the Orthodox sufferers. Nikitas retired to a secluded place near Constantinople, where he spent his last days of earthly life in prayer and thanksgiving to God for everything. He performed many miracles through prayer during his life. And when he died, his body was transferred to his monastery. And during the funeral, many sick people touched his body and were healed. His relics were placed next to the tomb of his spiritual father Nicephorus and his friend Athanasius. This great hierarch reposed in 824.
