Calendar for April 29 Holy Martyrs Agapia, Chionia and Irene
Holy Martyrs Agapia, Chionia and Irene. Sisters born in the vicinity of Aquileia. When Emperor Diocletian was in Aquileia, he ordered the execution of the famous spiritualist Chrysogonus. At that time, an old presbyter Zoilus had a vision in which he was told where the body of Chrysogonus was, unburied. The old man hurried, found the body of the martyr, placed it in a coffin and kept it in his home. On the thirtieth day after that, St. Chrysogonus appeared to him and informed him that within nine days the three girls would suffer martyrdom, and that he too would pass away at that time. Anastasia the Redeemer received the same revelation in a vision, who had followed her teacher Chrysogonus. And indeed, after 9 days, the elder Zoilus also appeared, and the three sisters were brought to trial before the emperor. The emperor advised the holy maidens to bow down to idols, but they all refused and confessed their firm faith in Christ. Irene told the emperor how foolish it was to bow down to things made of stone and wood, which had been ordered, for a high price, to be made by the hands of some mortal man. The enraged emperor threw them into prison. And when the emperor went to Macedonia, they took with him all the slaves and captives, among whom were these three saints. The emperor gave them to a certain duke Dulcitius to be tortured. This duke, inflamed with dark passion, wanted to defile the virgins, but when he wanted to enter the prison with them, at a time when they were praying to God, he lost his mind, and attacked the black cauldrons and pots in front of the door to hug and kiss them, and thus he left all red and black. Hearing about this case, the emperor ordered that the second duke, Sisinius, undertake the trial of these sisters. After severe torture, the judge sentenced the first two sisters to be burned, and kept Irene for some time, hoping that he would be able to defile her. But when he sent Irene with soldiers to the brothel, the angels of God saved this pure virgin, returned the soldiers and led her to a hill. The next day, the duke went out with soldiers to that hill, but not being able to succeed, he ordered that Irene be shot with arrows. Saint Anastasia gathered all three bodies in one place and buried them honorably. They all suffered honorably for Christ the King and Lord around the year 304.
