Calendar for April 30 - Venerable Simeon Bishop of Persia

During the time of the wicked emperor Savorius, or Sapor, Simeon was called out for Christ with two of his presbyters, Abdelaius and Ananias. Before them, the emperor's eunuch Ustazan, who had first renounced Christ, and then, moved by the rebuke of St. Simeon, again confessed the true faith before the emperor. Another 1,000 Christians were taken to the slaughterhouse with Simeon. Simeon narrowly escaped, so that he would be the last to be cut down, and so that he could encourage the Christians to the end, so that none of them would waver because of the fear of death. When Presbyter Ananias put his head on the stump, his whole body trembled. And the king's bailiff, Fusiks, who was a secret Christian, began to encourage Ananias, saying: "don't be afraid, old man, close your eyes, and be manly, so that you can see the divine light!" As soon as he said that, he would be summoned as a Christian and accused to the emperor. The emperor also suffers from great fatigue, and so does his daughter, the virgin Ascitreia. Finally, St. Simeon was cut down, after first sending his flock to the other world. The following year, on Good Friday, Azat, the emperor's favorite eunuch, would be killed for Christ, along with a thousand other faithful. Then the king took pity on his eunuch, and stopped the further killing of Christians. All of them died honorably for Christ the King and Lord in 341 or 344.
Saint Akakije, bishop of Militinski. Saint Agapitus, Pope of Rome. Venerable Savatije and Zosimus.
