Calendar for April 8 The Feast of the Holy Archangel Gabriel – (Ode to the Annunciation)
The Church has received from ancient times, from the Jerusalem typicons and the constitution of the great family of Saint Sava the Sanctified, that on the first day after the Annunciation of the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos, the feast of the Holy Archangel Gabriel, the herald of joy, is celebrated. For it is fitting to pay homage to him who serves the mystery of our salvation, bringing to the Most Pure Virgin the news of the incarnation of God the Word in her pure womb. When all the citizens of a city show great respect to the envoy of the earthly king who brings the city some gracious word of the king, all the more so should a special feast be held in honor of the envoy of the Heavenly King, the wonderful prince of angels, who brought the all-merciful news of eternal salvation to the entire human race. How remarkable is this envoy, who had previously himself indicated his dignity to Saint Zechariah, saying: I am Gabriel, who stand before God (Luke 1:19), that is, I stand closer to the throne of God than the other angels. And just as in the earthly kingdom the dignitary who is closest to the king has more prestige than other dignitaries who stand further away, so in the heavenly kingdom: the holy Angels who stand closer to God and closely observe the mysteries of God, shine with greater glory and prestige than the other Angels who are in lower ranks. Holy Scripture says that there are seven Angels of the highest rank, the supreme princes of the Angels, who always stand closest to God and the inaccessible glory of God. In the book of Saint Tobit it is written that the companion of the young Tobit announces that he is one of the seven Angels who stand before God (Tobit 12:15). And Saint John the Theologian in his Revelation mentions the seven supreme Angels, saying: Grace to you and peace from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come; and of the seven spirits which are before his throne (Rev. 1:4). Of these seven Angels, therefore, one is Saint Gabriel, second in number, after Saint Michael the first. For they are enumerated by name thus: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selathiel, Jegudiel, Barachiel.
Someone may ask: Why did God not send to the Most Holy Virgin the first in number, the angel Michael, but the second in number, Gabriel? It should be known: all seven of the supreme Angels are equal to each other in dignity, only in the enumeration one begins with Michael; and each of them has his own separate ministry: Michael is the conqueror of the adversaries; Gabriel is the messenger of the mysteries of God; Raphael is the healer of human ailments; Uriel is the enlightener of the darkened, for he is the radiance of the divine fire; Selathil – a prayerful one, because he constantly prays to God for people and encourages people to pray; Jegudil – a praiser of God, because he strengthens people who do anything for the glory of God, and asks for a reward for them; Barachiel – the giver of God’s blessing; and our mediator of God’s benefits. Therefore, Michael would not be sent with the good news, since that is not his ministry; his is: to hold the drawn sword, to strike at enemies, and to pursue them. Gabriel would be sent, because his ministry is to announce the secrets of God, as he announced to the holy prophet Daniel the liberation of God’s people from Babylon and the time of the Messiah’s coming, and to the holy Zechariah – the birth of the holy Forerunner from a barren mother. And it is said that he also instructed the holy prophet Moses in the desert when writing the Book of Genesis. There is also a pious opinion that he announced the good news to the holy righteous Joachim and Anna and the conception of the Most Holy Theotokos, and that he was the guardian angel of the Most Pure Virgin from conception and birth, and that he brought her food in the Holy of Holies. He also brought her the good news of the conception of the Son of God. Gabriel was also sent so that the Annunciated One could be known by his name. For the name Gabriel means the strength of God, or God and man. And by his very name the Annunciator confirmed that the strong God, the Lord, would become a perfect man in the womb of the Virgin, that is, the perfect God would become a perfect man. And a perfect, complete man not in the sense of physical age, but in the sense of strength and intelligence. Because other children, being conceived in their mothers' wombs, have neither intelligence nor strength. And conceiving in the womb of the Most Holy Virgin, the Child, from the very moment of His conception in His little body, would be a perfect man with ineffable intelligence and invincible strength. For the prophet says: I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. And the Lord said to me: Call his name: Swift to the prey, swift to the plunder. For before the child shall know how to cry, My father and my mother, He shall carry away the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria (Is. 8:3-4), that is, a child who has not yet spoken, but has great strength and power to defeat His enemies. And this is what Gabriel foreshadowed with His name: God-man, the mighty God, who was conceived by His announcement, and by the descent of the Holy Spirit into the incorruptible womb of the Virgin.
