Calendar for April 9 - Holy Martyr Matrona of Thessalonica

Saint Matrona, as a poor girl, was a servant in the house of a Jew in Thessaloniki, whose wife's name was Pautila. This lady of hers often mocked Matrona because of her faith in Christ, abused her a lot, and often forced her to the Jewish faith. But Matrona endured all this meekly for the sake of Christ, and secretly went to church. Once Pautila found out that Matrona was going to church secretly from her, so she asked her angrily: Why didn't you go to the synagogue but to the Christian church? To that, the blessed Matron boldly answered her: Because God lives in the Christian Church, and He departed from the Jewish synagogue. That's the reason I don't go to the synagogue but to the church.
Enraged by such an answer, the Jewish woman beats her mercilessly and locks her in a dark room, where she is also tied up. But the next day he found her untied by the power of God, kneeling in prayer and praising God. And again the lady beat her to death with raw veins, then bound her even more tightly, then locked her in the chamber again, and sealed the door, so that no one would enter her and find herself in trouble. And the saint stayed in that prison for four days without food or drink, strengthened by God. Then Pautila removed the seals from the door, and when she opened it she again saw the unbound Matron standing at prayer. This enraged her tremendously, and she beat the blessed one with thick sticks, then imprisoned her barely alive again, where the saint ended up giving her soul to God. Then the wicked woman took the body of the holy girl and threw it from the height of her house to the ground. The Christians took the much-suffering body of the holy martyr Matrona and buried it honorably.
After that, Bishop Alexander of Thessaloniki, having learned about the many miracles performed by the holy martyr, built a church in her name, and laid her honorable relics in it. And the evil torturer Pautila soon receives the just punishment of God: from the same place on the house, from where she threw down the body of Matrona, she slips, falls on the cobblestones and falls to her death. And that's how evil exposes its wretched soul. Saint Matrona suffered in the third or fourth century.
