Calendar for August 10 - Holy apostles and deacons Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon and Parmen
All four are from the number of 7 deacons and 70 apostles. The other deacons were Stefan, Philip and Nikolai. The proto-martyrs Stephen and Philip are celebrated on special days, and Nicholas did not join the ranks of saints because of his heresy. Prohorus was ordained by the apostle Peter as the bishop of Nicomedia. He was for some time at the service of St. John the Theologian on the island of Patmos and recorded the Revelation, which he heard from his mouth. The infidels killed him in Antioch. Nicanor died in Jerusalem, on the same day as Archdeacon Stephen, and soon after him 2,000 more Christians, who were killed by the Jews. Timon was a bishop in Arabia where he was crucified, and Parmenus died in front of the apostles who mourned and buried him.
