Calendar for August 17 - The Holy Seven Martyrs in Ephesus
When Emperor Decius organized an idol sacrifice in Ephesus, 7 young men: Maximilian, Jamvlichus, Martinianus, John, Dionysius, Exakustodianus and Antoninus, took refuge in a cave in the nearby Ohlon hill, which the emperor walled up. But God let the young men have a long sleep. After more than 200 years, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Younger, a great dispute arose over the resurrection of the dead. The emperor prayed to God to somehow reveal the truth to the people. Then the shepherds of a certain Adoli started to build sheepfolds on Ohlon and took stone by stone from the walled opening of that cave. The young men woke up, as they had fallen asleep. Emperor Theodosius himself used to come to talk with them. But after a week, God took them to Himself, to wait for the day of general resurrection.
