Calendar for August 22 - Holy Apostle Matthias
He was a native of Bethlehem, from the tribe of Judah. He studied in Jerusalem, with Saint Simeon the Theotokos. He was counted among the Seventy Lesser Apostles. After the Lord's Ascension, the apostles chose him by lot as one of the Twelve, instead of Judas the traitor (Acts Acts 1, 26). He preached the Gospel in Judea, and then in Ethiopia, where he suffered great suffering. He also preached in Macedonia, where they wanted to blind him, but he saved himself by becoming invisible to his persecutors. After he was in prison, where the Lord appeared to him and strengthened him, he returned to Judea. There he was brought to court before the high priest Annan, who had previously killed the apostle Jacob. He was killed with stones, and then they cut off his head with an axe.
Holy Martyr Anthony. The holy martyrs Julian, Marcian and others with them. Great Lady's fast.
