Calendar for December 14 Saint Prophet Nahum
A native of the town of Elkosh, across the Jordan, from the tribe of Simeon. He lived in 700 BC. 200 years after the prophet Jonah, he prophesied the destruction of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrians, the most populous and richest city in the ancient world, which spread over an area of about 90 kilometers. After Jonah's sermon, the Ninevites repented, for which reason God spared them and did not destroy them. But over time, they forgot about the mercy of God, and again became corrupt. The prophet Nahum prophesied their destruction, and in order not to repent, he did not spare them. The entire city perished in an earthquake, flood, and fire, so that not a trace of it remained. The holy prophet Nahum lived for 45 years. He reposed in the Lord, leaving behind a small book of his prophecies.
Saint Philaret the Merciful. Christmas Fast.
