Calendar for July 17 - Holy Martyr Emperor Nikolai Romanov and others with him
Nikolai Romanov was born in Tsarski Selo in 1868. His father, the Russian Tsar Alexander III, wanted Nicholas to be strong and tough as a soldier, but he had a gentle nature. He married Alexander (Alix of Hesse) in 1894. Between 1895 and 1901, Nicholas and Alexandra gave birth to four princesses: Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia. In 1904, Prince Alexei was born. The Bolsheviks killed them all in Yekaterinburg on the night between July 16 and 17, 1918. Tsar Nicholas was deeply pious. During his reign, ten thousand temples and over seven hundred and fifty monasteries were built in Russia. He especially respected Venerable Seraphim of Sarovsk, who prophesied his and his family's martyrdom.
