Calendar for July 2 - Saint John of Shanghai
Bishop Jovan (Maksimovic), originally Serbian, was born in Kharkiv in 1896. As an officer of the Tsar's army, he fought against the Bolsheviks. He was wounded in the leg and was crippled for the rest of his life. Escaping to Serbia, he earned his living by selling newspapers on the street. He walked barefoot both in summer and winter. His priest, Metropolitan Antonije (Hrapovicki), made him a monk in the Miljkovo monastery. Since then, he never went to bed to sleep. He was bishop in Shanghai, Paris and San Francisco. He spent his life in a great feat, in constant prayer to God, and God endowed him with miracle-working: he performed miracles while he was still alive, and after his death, they are innumerable. The Russian Church Abroad canonized him in 1994. His remains are in San Francisco.
Holy Apostle Jude. Venerable Paisius the Great. Holy Martyr Zosimus. Venerable Jovan Otselnik. St. Peter's Day fast.
