
Calendar for June 17 - Holy priest-martyr Joanikija of Montenegro
Metropolitan Joanikije (Lipovac) was born in 1890 in Stolivo in Boka Kotorska. He graduated from the Orthodox Theological Institute in Zadar, and the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. As a member of the archpriest, he was elected vicar bishop of Budimljan in 1939. He received his monastic vows in the Rakovica monastery from Skopje Metropolitan Josif. He was ordained a bishop in 1940. In the same year, he was elected Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral. He managed the Montenegrin-coastal bishopric during very difficult war times. Because of the persecution of his clergy, he tried to leave the country with seventy priests, but he failed. Communists shot priests in Slovenia, and the Metropolitan was brutally murdered near Arandjelovac.
