Calendar for May 1 - Holy Martyr John Novi Janjinski - Holy and Great Wednesday
A native of Ioannina, the former capital of Emperor Pyrrhus. When his poor parents died, young Jovan moved to Constantinople and continued his trade there (because he was a craftsman). Not long before that, the Turks had conquered Constantinople, and many of the Christians had renounced Christ out of fear and accepted Muhammad's faith.
St. Jovan had his shop right among these small towns. The more the young John burned with love for Christ the Lord, the stronger he manifested himself as a Christian before these betrayers of Christ. And he began to argue with them about faith, and finally reprimanded them for betraying Christ. Then they dragged him before the court and falsely accused him as if he had previously accepted Islam, and now he has returned to Christianity. After being tortured and beaten with sticks and iron bars, they threw him into a dungeon.
The second day - it was the day of the Resurrection of Christ - they took him again to stretch, and John came out joyfully singing: "Christ is risen from the dead!" He boldly said to his tormentors: "Do what you want, so that they send me as soon as possible from this short-lived life to eternal life: I am a slave of Christ, I follow Christ, I die for Christ, so that I may live with Him!" After that, Jovan would be chained and brought to the crematorium. Seeing the big fire prepared for him, Jovan himself ran and jumped into the flames. And his tormentors, seeing how he loved death in the fire, pulled him out of the fire and sentenced him to be cut with a sword.
When they cut off his head, they threw both head and body into the fire. Later, Christians scattered the ashes and collected some remains of his honorable and miraculous relics, and buried them in the Great Church in Constantinople. That's how St. Jovan Janjinski died a martyr's death and received the famous martyr's crown on April 18, 1526.
Venerable John. Holy Martyr Victor.
