Calendar for May 10 - Burning of the relics of Saint Sava in Vračar
The body of Saint Sava was buried in the Mileševa monastery. Seeking comfort and healing during the time of Turkish tyranny, the Serbian people from various parts gathered over the relics of their saint. Fearing that an uprising against the Turks would start in that place, Sinan Pasha of Belgrade ordered that the relics of Saint Sava be taken to Belgrade and burned there. At the head of the Turkish army that went to collect the body of Saint Sava was Ahmet Bey Oćuz. The army invaded Milesevo on Good Friday, ransacked the monastery, took the ark with the holy relics and took it to Sinan Pasha. The next day, on Holy Saturday, the relics of Saint Sava of Serbia were burned at Vračar. It was in 1594. This gruesome event was accompanied by crying and wailing throughout the Serbian country.
