Calendar for May 24 - Saint Cyril and Methodius
Born brothers, born in Thessaloniki, from famous and rich parents, Leo and Maria. The older brother Metodije spent ten years among the Slavs (Macedonian) as an officer and thus learned the Slavic language. After that, Methodius went away to Mount Olympus and dedicated himself to the monk's feat. He was later joined by Kirill (Konstantin). But when the Khazarian emperor Kagan sought from the emperor Mihailo preachers of the faith of Christ, then, according to the emperor's order, these two brothers were found and sent among the Khazars. Having convinced Kagan of the faith of Christ, they baptized him with a large number of his leaders and an even larger number of people. After some time they returned to Constantinople, where they compiled a Slavic alphabet of thirty-eight letters, and began to translate church books from Greek to Slavic. At the invitation of Prince Rastislav, they went to Moravia, where they spread and established the pious faith, and multiplied books and gave them to priests to teach the youth. At the invitation of the Pope, they went to Rome, where Cyril fell ill and died on February 14, 869. Then Methodius returned to Moravia and worked until his death to strengthen the faith of Christ among the Slavs. After his death - and he rested in the Lord on April 6, 885 - his disciples, five in number, with St. Clement as bishop at their head, crossed the Danube and descended to the south, to Macedonia, where, from Ohrid, they continued their work among the Slavs , starting with Cyril and Methodius in the north.
