Calendar for May 28 - Venerable Pachomius the Great
Native Egyptian. As a soldier, he participated in Emperor Constantine's battle against Maxentius. After learning about Christ, he was baptized and went to the Thevaid desert to do asceticism. An angel appeared to him in the place of Tavenisiot and gave him a tablet on which was written the constitution of a communal monastery, ordering him to establish such a monastery in that place. And Pachomius began to build many cells, even though he was alone with his brother John. But soon many monks settled there. Pachomius founded six more monasteries. The number of his disciples grew to 7,000, many of whom were later canonized. Countless miracles were manifested through Saint Pachomius. He passed away peacefully in 348. He is considered the founder of the monastery community.
Saint Achilles, bishop of Lariska. Venerable Siluan.
