Calendar for May 31 - Holy Martyr Theodotus of Ankir
The holy martyrs Theodotus and the seven girl martyrs, Thecus, Alexander, Claudius, Faina, Ephrasius, Matrona, and Julia. Theodotus was married and was an innkeeper in Ankyra during the time of Emperor Diocletian. Although he was married, he lived according to the words of the apostle: "From now on, let those who have wives be as if they did not have them" (1 Cor 7, 29). And he kept an inn, so that he could undoubtedly help the Christians as best as possible. His inn would shelter the persecuted faithful. Secretly, Theodotus sent help to the scattered Christians in the mountains, and secretly collected the bodies of the dead and buried them. At that time, seven girls were brought to court and tortured for Christ, they were tortured, mocked, and finally drowned in a lake. One of them, Saint Thecus, appeared to Theodotus in a dream and told him to take their bodies out of the lake and bury them. After a dark night, Theodotus went with one other to fulfill the will of the martyr, and, guided by the angels of God, managed to find all seven bodies and buried them. But that friend betrayed him to the judge, and the judge put him to severe torture. But Theodotus suffered all the torments as if he were in someone else's body, having all his mind immersed in the Lord. When the torturer turns his whole body into wounds, and breaks his teeth with stones, he orders that he be cut with a sword. When he was taken to the slaughterhouse, many Christians wept for him, and Saint Theodotus spoke to them: "Don't weep, brothers, for me, but glorify our Lord Jesus Christ, who will help me to complete the feat and defeat the enemy." - Having said that, he laid his head on a tree stump under a sword, and was cut down in 303. A certain priest honorably buried the martyr's body on a hill outside the city. A temple in the name of Saint Theodotus would later be built at that place. (see June 7).
