Calendar for May 9 - Priest-martyr Vasilije Amasijski
Likinius, the son-in-law of the emperor Constantine, whose sister he married, pretended to be a Christian until the emperor gave him the entire East to govern, and then he began to persecute the Christians and surrendered to idolatry and all passions. Once they wanted to defile the virgin Glafira, who was in the service of the empress. She complained to the empress, and she sent her from the court in Nicomedia to the Pontic region, to Amasia, where she was received by Bishop Vasilije. From there she corresponded with the empress, but one letter fell into the hands of Licinius, who ordered that Glafira and the bishop be brought to him. In the meantime, Glafira died, so they brought only Vasilij. After the torture, he was cut and thrown into the sea, from where his body was pulled out by Christians with nets, near the city of Sinop, and transferred to Amasia.
