Calendar for November 7 Holy Martyrs Makrian and Martinius
After the death of Emperor Constantine the Great, the heresy of Arius took off again, and Emperor Constantius himself leaned towards it. Under the influence of two court magnates, Eusebius and Philip, ardent Arians, Patriarch Paul of Constantinople was exiled to Armenia, where the Arians drowned him. Marcianus was a reader and Martinius a subdeacon at the cathedral church, and they were scribes at the patriarch Paul. The two of them stood up for Orthodoxy in the conflict with the heretics. The Arians first tried to bribe them, and when they scornfully refused, they condemned them to death. They went out to the losing ground with raised hands, triumphant, praying and thanking God. They were cut in 355. St. John Chrysostom built the church over their relics.
