Calendar for September 28 Holy Great Martyr Nikita
Goth, a student of Bishop Theophilus Gotsky, who participated in the First Ecumenical Council. When the Gothic prince Athanaric began to torture the Christians, Saint Nikita stood before him and disfigured him for it. Put to terrible torments, the martyr of God professed the faith of Christ more and more strongly and prayed to God with more and more gratitude. On his chest, under his suit, he held an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, because she appeared to him consoling him. And he was holding a cross in his hands. After much torture, they threw him into the fire, where he surrendered his soul to the Lord. But his body remained unharmed. His friend Marian transferred the relics of Saint Nikitas to the Cilician city of Mopsuest, where he built a church dedicated to his name. Saint Nikita was martyred in 372.
