"Liturgy of the Domestic" is the most famous spiritual composition by the Russian author Alexander Grechaninov, who advocated the renaissance of the old Russian tradition, close to folk sources, but also for the symphonization of church singing. In composing this liturgy, Grechaninov used the tunes of the old national chant, but also of the later, melismatic demestich singing from the 15th and 16th centuries (the word demestich in the Byzantine tradition referred to the leader of the church choir). Luxurious harmony, lyricism and certainty, extensive solo episodes that approach an opera aria, are the main features of the work written in 1917 for solo tenor, choir and string orchestra, which was therefore never used in worship.
