Holy Martyr Vukašin

Bi Serb from the Herzegovinian village of Klepaca, which is located on the eastern bank of the Neretva (opposite Čapljina), where the old church of St. Apostle Luke, from the beginning of the 16th century, the endowment of the famous church builders Hrabren-Miloradović, and from 1857 the Church of the Transfiguration of Christ (which the Croats demolished to the ground in 1992, as well as the entire village). He was a native of the Mandrap family and his name was Vukshan. He must have been born at the end of the 19th century. Growing up in his village, he went and worked in Sarajevo, so when the Ustasha NDH came, he returned to his village, but the Croatian Ustasha also came there, killed everyone in his house and many other Serbs in the village and the surrounding area, and he were taken from some forest works to the infamous Jasenovac camp, along with many others. There, in January 1943, he was executed by the Ustasha butcher Žilo Friganović, who, seeing Vukašin, an elderly peasant, with a calm face and some unfathomable peace, watched the terrible slaughter of his fellow Orthodox. The rebuke brought him in front of the dug pit where innocent victims were slaughtered and thrown, and determined to break that peace and tranquility, he asked him to shout "Živio Pavelić", so as he did not answer anything, he just remained calm and serenely silent, the killer was his he cut one ear and one nose with a knife. When the torturer threatened to take his heart out of his chest, if he did not shout praise to Pavelic, the Blessed Martyr Vukašin, calmly looking at the torturer and through him at God's immensity, slowly and clearly said: "Do your job, child!" This answer and the heavenly peace on the face of the Holy New Martyr infuriated the murderer, so in his rage he gouged out his eyes, cut out his heart, slit his throat from ear to ear and then kicked him into the pit. Then the killer went crazy and told all this in the hospital to doctor Ned Zec, who later wrote it down. Martyr's fresco exists in the monastery of St. Archangel Gavrila in Zemun, then in the Jovan-do skete, in the monastery of Ostrog near Nikšić, and his assumed image is also painted among the Saints of the Zahum-Herzegovina Eparchy (which was done for the celebration of its 780th anniversary).

Troparion (voice 8): Vukašine Hercegovče, Novi Srpski Strastoterpče, for Christ's sake You died in the Jasenovac camp. When the torturer stabbed You with a knife, You said to him meekly: "Only you, child, do your work", because Christ has given us eternal life. Pray to him, Martyr, as the Savior of all, to save our Orthodox race as well.
