Matija Bećković in HN: Njegoš is the most important bishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church after Saint Sava and the greatest poet of the Serbian language
Herceg Novi is the city where Petar II Petrović Njegoš was educated, but also one of the rare cities about which he wrote some of the most beautiful verses, Matija Bećković said at the literary dinner held last night in Dvorana Park on the occasion of the Montenegrin cultural holiday - Njegoš day.
Njegoš, as Bećković pointed out, is the most important bishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church after Saint Sava and the greatest poet of the Serbian language.
"Just as St. Sava is greater today than it has ever been, so Njegos is more significant today than ever before." He is only smaller than himself, the one who will be. As long as the world and the ages, the Serbian people and the Serbian language are alive, his arrival in this world will be celebrated. It fell to our generation to celebrate his birthday. Such an honor will not be given to anyone again," he said.
According to Bećković, Njegoš's work "Luča mikrokosma" was dearest to the bishop and has remained locked to this day.
"Luča" is a liturgical poem, and the liturgy is an abbreviated Bible and the only truth about man. From the Cetinje desert, he ordered that "Luča" be printed in 500 copies and sent to him in 100. Even today, the circulation would not be larger, and 100 copies, it seems that he had someone to give away then, and I don't know who I would give them to today," he notes.
Every language becomes real only when the Bible is translated into it, according to Matija Bećković.
"That's how a nation becomes a nation, when it has itself in its own language and gets its own Bible." "Njegoš's songwriter is none other than the well-worn Gospel, whose words are imperishable and knowing them by heart is the surest landmark and way to save ourselves," he pointed out.
The writer Matija Bećković concluded that great languages give birth to great poets like Njegoš, and that every one of his words is alive and increasingly relevant. He rounded off the evening with verses from his poem "The Dust of the Father of Poetry".
