THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD CELEBRATED IN THE CHURCH OF ST. NIKOLE IN THE OLD TOWN
In the Church of St. Nicholas in Kotor's Old Town, the Savior's Day was liturgically celebrated today.
The archpriest of Kotor-Tivat, parish priest of Kotor, archpriest Nemanja Krivokapić addressed the faithful.
"Today we celebrate the Savior's Day. We celebrate the event described in the Gospel when the Lord Jesus Christ ascended before his disciples and went to Heaven.
From this event we see and are reminded that Christ was resurrected and defeated death.
So, when they crucified Him, the mission of the Lord Jesus Christ did not end, but after three days, as He had promised, He resurrected and showed Himself to His disciples.
In this Gospel, we see that he appeared to his disciples 40 days after the resurrection to confirm their belief that he was truly resurrected.
He also gave them instructions on what to do next, and on the 40th day after the resurrection, he ascended to Heaven, left the apostles, left this earth "and sat down at the right hand of the Glory of God with an all-human body".
He also promised to send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter Spirit, and we sing that in the troparion "to bring joy to the apostles because he promised them that he would send them the Holy Spirit", said Fr. Nemanja.
This is important because the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles gave birth to the Church in the form it still exists today.
"So, it is one whole cycle of saving events for us people, according to the Economy of Salvation." It is not only the Ascension that saves, but the whole series of events that Christ did for us humans, and that is why this holiday is called Salvation Day. On this day, we celebrate God who takes care of us humans and saves us," said Fr. Nemanja.
He reminds us that there are some philosophers and schools of thought who believe that God only created this world and that it is so transcendent that it has nothing to do with it.
"We do not believe in such a God. We believe in God who is the Creator, but also the All-Powerful (according to the Symbol of Faith - he holds everything and takes care of everything). This event also reminds us that, if God is the one who created us and does everything for us to be saved, that we also need to do something for our salvation, to live according to God's laws and church life, first of all through holy mysteries ", said, among other things, Fr. Nemanja.
Gospel of Luke, beginning 114 (24,36-53)
36. And while they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you!" 37. And they were afraid, and being afraid, they thought they saw a ghost. 38. And he said to them: "Why are you confused? And why do such thoughts enter your hearts? 39. See my hands and my feet, that I am the head; feel me and see; for the spirit has no body and bones as you see that I have." 40. And having said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41. And while they were still disbelieving for joy and wondering, he said to them: "Do you have anything here to eat?" 42. And they gave him a piece of roasted fish, and honey in a honeycomb. 43. And he took and ate before them. 44. And he said to them: "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything that was written about me in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled." 45. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46. And he said to them: "That is how it is written, and that is how Christ should suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47. and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name throughout all nations, starting from Jerusalem." 48. And you are witnesses of this. 49. And behold, I will send the promise of my Father upon you; and you sit in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high." 50. And he led them out to Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them. 51. And while he was blessing them, he departed from them and ascended to heaven. 52. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53. and were constantly in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen!
